Using Facebook Chat via Jabber

Since the launch of Facebook Chat, we've received a lot of positive feedback from users about being able to connect instantly with their friends on Facebook. With Chat fully launched and growing steadily, we've started working on more new features to enhance the Chat experience.
Right now we're building a Jabber/XMPP interface for Facebook Chat. In the near future, users will be able to use Jabber/XMPP-based chat applications to connect to Facebook Chat to:
* Communicate with their friends
* See which of their friends are online and view their profile pictures
* Set their statuses
Users can securely authenticate and authorize applications to connect to Chat on their behalf and send messages to their friends just like they can on Facebook.
We will share more details as we get closer to launch, but we wanted to give you a heads up so you can start thinking about (or even start building) Chat into your applications.
Please send us your comments and feedback to developer-feedback@facebook.com. Put [Chat via Jabber] in the subject line.

how about adding the ability for app-specific commands when both users have the app, such as
user_a> /hyperpoke user_b with hammer
user_b:
*user_b poked you with a metal hammer
this will allow apps to generate traffic from the chat

Its been 6 months since this announcement came out and Facebook has not said another word about it. Could we please get some kind of status update about the status of XMPP integration is at? There is a ton of users requesting Facebook support in various third-party clients, but most developers are waiting for the XMPP transports. Right now there is a bug in the development tracker http://bugs.developers.facebook.com/sho … gi?id=3152 that is a month old also requesting an update of some sort on the status of the integration. As I write this the bug has the highest number of votes in bugzilla with just over 2200.
Can we please got a blog post or SOME update to let us know whether or not it is still a work in progress?

Nothing? Even now? This feature would be very nice!

I agree. It will be very good feature. I hope, that someone implements this.

this would be very useful! i have seen chat via Connect (Meebo, Facebook for iPhone)..haven't grasped how they implement this yet but a jabber/xmpp compatibility would be great...

Is there any alternative for Jabber ?. What protocol does the face book chat uses?

I'm also very interested in this. There is currently a plugin available for pidgin users, but it's not very stable and you can't use it while using facebook in your browser.
Facebook Pidgin Plugin: http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-facebookchat/
Considering this thread has been up for over a year, it would be nice to hear of some progress...

Another bump to the thread - any updates on XMPP/Jabber support for FB chat? I know it's probably not the best way for Facebook to make money, this one, but I think it does have the potential with a lot of people seemingly interesting in developing for it.
Any kind of update from the FB Devs would be awesome.
