Latest FB navigation rollout

There was a navigation redesign rolled out this morning. Facebook Beta still doesn't reflect these changes.

The recently used application link has been removed from the Application dropdown menu. This is really bad, basically forcing everyone to keep a well updated application bookmark list WHICH doesn't display all the bookmarked applications - i.e. it displays only the first 10 bookmarked applications and doesn't offer any options to navigate through the rest.

Is this to be permanent? If so, will we get a FBML tag to allow users to easily bookmark our application?

Re: Latest FB navigation rollout

I'm not sure if the new nav was such a great idea.

The removal of Recently Used apps is well..... an annoyance and moving the Profile link too.

Also the "Profile" link it out of place.

Re: Latest FB navigation rollout

where gone "edit settings for this app" in app dropdown in a canvas page?? how one supposed to bookmark an app?? dont ever say only through edit app page.

there should be "more" link on click of which "fb popup" should show all bookmarks instead of just 10.

Re: Latest FB navigation rollout

i already have users complain that they can't find apps again on the new profile after first using them - the latest changes will make it even harder!

with the removal of both the "bookmark this app" and the "recently used apps" list from the dropdown, it seems that the only way that users can find an app again is if it spams them once a day with an announcement notification!

Yup, this is a very intense change.   And pretty useless from a user experience point of view.   Hopefully they roll it back immediately or it was just a mistake.

I added an app to my profile but it doesn't show up in my applications drop down?   That's pretty nuts.

Re: Latest FB navigation rollout

loading all 50 bookmarked apps everytime is not required.. but they can make "fb popup" showing all apps.

"edit settings for app" and "bookmark this app" are must sad they were telling they will make some new improvement with regards to apps, is it this ?? me going nuts, really..

Re: Latest FB navigation rollout

Can anyone find any reference for these changes prior to them being rolled out?

I'm not especially excited when changes pop out of the blue, much less when they're lacking functionality or just being clear-cut rationally-demoted.

Still keeping my fingers crossed all of this was just some weird fluke.

Re: Latest FB navigation rollout

Facebook bring back that list! Not even bookmarking works correctly -  why do you only allow 10 apps in the drop down with no [more] link, and sorted in arbitrary order instead of most-recently-used order?

Re: Latest FB navigation rollout

The latest navigation changes are ridiculous! I could not find my own applications this morning so how can I expect my users to find them? Like it was not enough that the new profile changes reduced the possibility of viral expansion to close to none you are now making it difficult for existing application users to find their applications again.

People that have visited our applications are our users. YOU count them as our users in your own statistics so you must agree with this. We know they are our users as they DO keep coming back to our application out of their own free will. So why are you now making it difficult for them to find their way back into our applications? Is this a deliberate attempt to sabotage third party applications?

We have picked up a massive drop in our application activity due to our users not being able to find their way back into our application. We have spent time and money on developing these applications and have even paid advertising fees to YOU. Stop messing with us and treating us like kids, we are not here to have fun, we are trying to create businesses and monetize our development efforts. Your behavior is making the usual monopolistic suspects look like angels. With Microsoft we at least knew what was coming. You keep making significant changes without any prior warning.

Stop thinking about our needs and you will die like the rest of the take-over-the-internet wannabes. Without us you will be reduced to a desperate and forgotten web service polluted with advertising that once wanted to own and control everything.

Clearly, we are pissed off.

This change was pretty crappy!  Bookmarks don't work, and now it's even more clicks for a user to find the app they want if it's not in the list.

Even more clicks?  Hell, I had to use the search to find one of my own apps!

Re: Latest FB navigation rollout

I was trying to explain to members of my own development team the convoluted steps necessary to bookmark our application now, and even they had problems figuring it out -- end users aren't going to be figuring this out, and grandfathered apps are going to have a HUGE advantage, because all of their bookmarks are there by default (even though no user explicitly added a bookmark).

you 're kidding! this change is definately not here to stay, it MUST be a bug, or caused by mistargeted protons in the LHC. This is ridiculous, I now tell my users to store the app in their browser bookmarks instead, it's so much simpler. What's more ridiculous is that this has been going on all day (here in europe) and facebook hasn't even acknowledged the bug

Also here in Europe. About now I'm hoping when the devs over at FB HQ sit down after having a morning cup of coffee see what the kerfeck happened and just roll things back to normal.

Re: Latest FB navigation rollout

My guess is that the "secret feature" that will start with the full rollout has sth. to do with bookmarks / display of apps on the page.
Either they put the bookmarks there where the bar "welcome to the new facebook" is now, at least in firefox it would look nice because it's exactly below the firefox bookmarks (just as icons or sth).
Or they will create an "app bar" next to the translations / chat / notifications bar where app bookmarks / recently used apps pop out.

So let's give them a chance for the full rollout . ]  I'm optimistic, they will make it easier to find the apps.

one more thing, (if facebook staff are reading this) :  On the edit apps page, it would be nice if clicking on the "Star" should toggle "bookmark-unbookmark" instead of "edit -> bookmark tick on", just like voting of the translations app.
So e.g everywhere where are grey stars the app is not bookmarked, and if they are bookmarked the star turns yellow for example.
Same for the "Add to Profile": Instead of the "edit" button,  next to every app on the app settings page should be a grey profile and info symbol if it is not added (instead of blank space), and a colorful one if it is added. Clicking on it would open the menu for that setting. It would look more like a matrix then.

Re: Latest FB navigation rollout

Thanks a lot for your feedback. cbalcero is right;  we're still in progress of rolling out some features that make these even easier and make apps more discoverable and available on Facebook as well as easier to bookmark.  We're sorry about the confusion -- we're in the midst of finalizing the feature and what you see here is definitely not final! Expect it to be out very very soon, and hope you'll be as excited as we are.

Thanks,

Re: Latest FB navigation rollout

I was about to report a bug about "recently-used-apps are gone" bug. Based on what I see here, it doesn't seem a bug after all! Hey FB, it's a blocker! I'm very serious.

Visibility&discoverability of an app has been  the most critical issue  since new facebook design came out. My users have been complaining that apps are just hidden out of sight. With the recent change, it's got much worse. One of my users said "One Cannot add to my application list! There is no button I can add the application to my application short cut list. There might be a way to do it somehow, but I wasn't able to find it."

This issue must be resolved ASAP.

That's great, but how about rolling back the change until the feature is finalized so that all your users can still access the apps in the mean time? As is right now your users are confused and angry about not having access to their favorite applications. There isn't even a bookmark option. This is truly a blocker issue that needs to be rolled back - or we need a time frame as to when the feature will be 'finalized' and rolled out to fix this. Just saying 'oh this is not final don't worry about it' is not acceptable when somewhere around half of your users are on the new version right now.

Re: Latest FB navigation rollout

I'm pretty disappointed by this change.  The "recent applications" section was a very useful feature that definitely made up a bit for the migration away from add.

The new placement of the applications on the chat bar makes absolutely no sense.  The concept behind the Facebook navigation bar is to have a simple location to navigate all of Facebook.  Applications are a part of Facebook's content, but now they're stuffed on the chat bar, which is used to convey information that is not site content; it's a private user-to-user conversation.  Now, to navigate to applications, I must move my mouse cursor all the way to the other end of the screen.  So, not only is the new menu less useful, its placement is nonsensical.

The problem you're trying to address is that users can't figure out where their applications are.  Why couldn't you do this by adding icons to the top bar?  Why not have a grey blob in the navigation bar next to the applications link to show, say, three application icons?  Those icons sitting there would surely clue people in.  Why not add a temporary tool tip (like you just did for the new location of the applications menu, I might add) to clue people in?  There has to be a way to do it that would make sense.
