new developer application settings editor
Dec 3, 2008 9:12pm
We previewed the new application settings editor in Monday's post on the Developer blog, and tonight we just launched it. For the next week or two, we'll allow you to switch back and forth between the old and new editors, much like how users could switch between the old and new profiles earlier this year. To switch between editors, click the link at the top of the editor. If you have any feedback, let us know in the developer forums.

Any help would be appreciated

I can no longer debug my code because I cannot set Callback URL to start with something like "http://localhost:2063/......"
Please change this urgently, you are costing me time and money!

I had my hands on facebook developing 2 days ago and I must say I was a bit deluded by the documentation (except for the reference). This new form for adding applications is tricky, things are confused and very very badly explained. Now, I didn't have any problems understanding the structures, the architecture and the language but this way to manage the applications is a total waste of time. Informations in the form are have no coherence with the common IT language. It could appear well organized and well explained to those who develop FB apps since some time, but, sure, not to those who start. Some example:
Where the form asks for the Callback URL, You are not specifying what kind of URL is required. A URL can be http://www.mysite.com/ or http://www.mysite.com/myfacebookapps/root/ or http://www.mysite.com/myfacebookapps/ro … index.php. Facebook developers team should suggest if they want the root or just the base URL, without forcing people to crawl forums around the world. In the Canvas page URL settings, why don't You tell something more on what the developer should write in? Why don't You distinguish the optional fields by required ones? I really can't understand what is the minimum set of fields to fill to have my application work.
So, dear FB Dev Team, You have my high respect for Your great work. FBML and other languages are clear, making an application for FB is easy, but this new form to add applications is a bottleneck. Believe me, if this remains as it is, lot of people will renounce developing on FB.

very nicely put stitch ... i guess as a n00b i just don't tolerate indecipherable rubbish very well ... with the rep and reach that fb has, i was expecting something at least bordering on user-friendly
what i find in those 6 tabs to establish an application is utterly useless gobbledegook - like you say, transitioning from another model to the current for past developers was probably a breeze ... but if you ain't been there and done that then this model is utter rubbish ...
now, who do i sue for the 3 days i have wasted just trying to get a basic appn up and running? fb-dudes, you are wasting people's time; time is always money; so you are stealing from me and many others - please can you get someone to write the in-screen tips and support documentation properly? here is some advice
1: get a techo dude to write draft 1
2: get a past user to proof and correct and modify
3: get a n00b to implement from that document
repeat 1, 2, and 3, until the n00b you get can do it without much effort outside the normal
cool?

You aren't the only one who has found this all very confusing.
The documentation has always been behind and left up to the community to make up for where they've essentially not done it. It is disappointing, and what is annoying is they often make essentially unnecessary changes which just adds to the confusion of the little documentation there is.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't find the place to edit developers of the application?

Softy,
You should be able to edit the developers on the Basic page of Settings, underneath the icon selections.

I am new to Facebook development and have been trying to get a sample desktop application working.
I have spent the last 2 days experimenting with settings and have discovered that the problem is that any new application id I create is automatically created as a website application.
From the research I have done, it would seem that in the old version, when you created a new app it let you choose between either DESKTOP or WEBSITE.
Can you please advise me how I either change my existing APP to be a DESKTOP app or how I can create a new application id with the type set to DESKTOP.
I am very keen to start developing but without the ability to create a DESKTOP application id I have no way to proceed.
Your help with this issue will be much appreciated, and I am sure the other people that have noticed this issue will be equally pleased to learn how to resolve it.
Thanks

I like the change you guys made as the options are well organized however there is one bug that *has* to be fixed ASAP and another feature I would like re-added.
1. http://localhost:port/ is not considered a valid callback URL. This is the *only* way .NET developers can do IFrame development using their own box under II6 as we cannot create subdomains and such. Please fix this. It worked in the old version and in fact I have some apps set to it but can't go in and edit them anymore as the invalid callback url fails the validation now.
2. Please re-implment the canvas url real-time checking. In the previous version of this feature, you could type in a name and immediately know if the canvas url was available or not. Now you have to fill out the form and hit submit and have it error out.
Thanks.
EDIT: Just realized #1 is submitted as a bug here:

There's a way to work around the 'http://localhost:port/" problem:
Just enter 'http://127.0.0.1:port/' instead of 'http://localhost:port/'. The 127.0.0.1 means nothing else than localhost, but IP's are accepted by the form validation.
Greetings,
Stops

I will second that.
Another thing, clicking save sends you out of the application editor, back to the overview of your applications. I would like to stay where I am.
