Invites Violation? A hoax?

This has to be a joke, I don't think Facebook would do this without telling developers....

-----

Dear developer,

Your application has been temporarily restricted from using requests/invites.  This is because users of your application get trapped in a UI interaction for inviting friends.

If the user clicks the Facebook-rendered buttons “Skip†, “Cancel†, or “Skip This Step†, he must not be re-presented with an invite friends UI unless he explicitly selects to invite friends from a page that offers more than that single option.  If you use another UI that does not have one of these buttons rendered by Facebook, the application must offer some other navigation option to leave the invite friends process, and the user must not be re-presented with an invite friends UI unless he explicitly selects to invite friends from a page that offers more than that single option.

If you correct this aspect of your application, the moratorium will be lifted.  Please respond to this email once you have made the necessary changes and please include your application id for verification purposes.

If you wish to correspond, please reply to this message.

Thank you,

Re: Invites Violation? A hoax?

While I cannot authenticate this message, if you circumvent the design e.g. remove the ability to skip invites, I wouldn't doubt this would be a plausible course of action.  Applications that do so are a threat to facebook as a company. Think what would happen if 280,000 of your customers decided that they would stop using your product if you didn't do something about the manner in which you conduct business.

Finally.  I wonder how long it will be before users start trusting invitations again.

Re: Invites Violation? A hoax?

I find it funny how some people start to complain when they've been caught abusing the system.  Its pretty obvious Facebook didn't intend developers to force invites and/or make the skip button inactive (or ineffectual).

In the past some developers attitude has been 'well I'll stop doing it when Facebook make me' looks like they're starting to make you.

Methinks it is a good thing.

Re: Invites Violation? A hoax?

Although we don't comment on individual developer communications, generally speaking sometimes a moratorium is necessary not to be punitive, but as a technical limitation to protect users while developers adjust an application.

Facebook will be talking more about policy enhancements in the coming days;  in the meantime, developers may want to check out the new Developers Wiki Platform Policy page.

Thanks,

Re: Invites Violation? A hoax?

So how long do we have before our apps get banned? 1 Day? 2?

Re: Invites Violation? A hoax?

Also if I have a condensed multi-friend select form, which does not have a 'skip' button, why am I being punished as well?

Re: Invites Violation? A hoax?

1.
can i still take my users on a merry go round ? can i take them to another app (see Polar Bear - dev company)
--- wherein the About page --- woa, is a link to another app ---

2.
man, .... hey jesse *farmer*, it would be awesome if you can put a marker down for today and have Adonomics show us how it affects DAU. it would kill spamminess but to what extent it affects the big players vs. the small players' apps.

3.
chris d: the list you sent me, there's no app for it out there is it? cos im about done with mine.

Re: Invites Violation? A hoax?

Doesn't prevent apps from require invites to doo anything with the apps. All it requires is that the user goes to another page when they click skip. That page may just as well be a message explaining that they need to invite friend in order to use the app with a link to go back. TOS complied, invites still forced.
