Re: "Would Facebook Really Kill All Viral Channels for Developers?"

Lets face it people, this is the end of facebook as a developer platform

The core of the platform is the notification / invite system. Once that's gone, there is no interaction with the user and their friends, your app might as well be a website, at least then you won't have to deal with all the facebook api bugs anymore.

I don't believe the facebook platform team is to blame for this. I am convinced it's the bean counters and their spreadsheet analysis of maximizing profit. The sad part is, it'll probably work for 1-2 quarters, advertising profits will be up as many developers try to salvage their apps, and the bean counters will get their bonuses. Just my guess of what's happening.

How are the Myspace viral communication channels right now ?

This all is a bit out of the twilight zone.

And without viral new or newer APPs might as well not even bother with FaceBook-->Wheres the future?

Seems like it's a great big NADA..!

My thoughts..

I found it interesting in the Roadmap Garage (I provided a link in an earlier post), when someone asked about users being reluctant to give permission to their real email the presenter suggested an analogy that someone wants you to call them but doesn't want to give you their phone number

Yeah that was possibly the worst analogy I've heard in my life.  They are not even remotely similar

This is like someone wanting you to email them and you insisting they give you their home or cell phone number or you won't contact them.  Different forms of communication were created for a reason.

The whole point of Facebook is that it's supposed to be a communication channel in and of itself...  who lost sight of that goal?

Its actually like a customer wanting your home phone number.  Many of us are happy to give them our business number, but home number - no way.  If you do give someone your number you can filter people out by caller id - however, this isn't really a viable option with email.

Gotta be some sense to it when even the Mods definitely agree

it seems myspace is the only other big option. then there's yahoo which is expected to launch their apps to users, and bebo which is easy to convert to, but has very different audience.
