Slide, the company that makes Facebook's most popular apps, says it's done making new ones for the social network. Keith Rabois, VP of strategy and business development, told us this week that the company wants to concentrate on making the existing apps like FunWall and Top Friends better -- and ultimately figure out how to generate real money from them.
[....]
Read between the lines here, and you can see a slightly different story: Slide is saying that the great Facebook app landgrab, which kicked off a year ago, is over. And it's ended up with the best property.
Wait a minute. Isn't there unlimited real estate in cyberspace? Sure, theoretically. But Facebook is going to launch a massive overhaul that will ultimately make it harder for new applications to get the same kind of traction their predecessors did, because it will be harder to “go viral.†Rabois insists that the redesign hasn't had an effect on Slide's thinking. But... “For new developers, it’s clearly going to be more difficult. Fortunately we’re not (new developers). Nor do we plan on launching new applications.â€
So. Non-Slide app developers of the world: What do you think? Are you folks conceding? Or is Slide missing an opportunity here? Let us know in comments below.

There's another way to interpret what Slide is saying:
We got caught with our hands in the cookie jar, doing all the things we're not supposed to do, and got a boot shoved sideways up our rectal cavity by FB who suddenly have seemed to have grown something called a spine.
Since we don't like it, we're not going to bother building new crappy apps for their platform, and will grudgingly make our existing apps conform to the TOS that every other developer has to adhere to, after all, those juicy users are getting us some real money, even though we pretend not to make any.
I prefer that explanation really, although it's most likely wishful thinking.

In the grownup world, which sometimes FB forget its in, assuming this story and associated announcement is true, FACEBOOK MUST TAKE THIS ANNOUNCEMENT AS AN OUT-N-OUT INSULT. Slide got nowhere in MySpace, came here, milked it for its worth, and is now saying.... "you know what I'm not making more apps on your platform". No matter how much more work they're looking to do to upgrade their apps (hey no big deal, ALL of us do that for our own apps anyways), saying this is as UNGRATEFUL an INGRATE as Slide can be.
INGRATE. Max Levchin, maybe business school would have done you some good.

Definitely wishful thinking. Would be great if it actually happened though.

I know
It's the whole FB-with-spine bit that makes it pure fantasy
In all reality though, from the sound of it it does sound like Slide might be seeing trouble up ahead and is busy moving itself out of the way before the excrement hits the rotating air movement device.

Here's a fun bit, someone reviewed a RockYou app (Likeness) on MySpace, the end result being that it was spammy as ever, but apparently MySpace knows how to deal with it:
Update (2pm PST): In the comments of this post, RockYou CEO Lance Tokuda informs us that this application is being shutdown. Additionally, we have learned that MySpace will be deleting all of the comments that the application left on user profiles and that the MySpace Platform will not support such behavior.
Now that's what I'm talkin' bout!

I heard RockYou got their SuperWall app pulled from MySpace for spam. Likely, Facebook did the same for Top Friends.

Maybe slide itself did it.. they were partners to facebook while launch of platform

If this is true. Today, I rediscovered my love for FACEBOOK.

nice to see Patrick Shyu's photo nice situated in there. Didn't know he joined Slide or sold to them their app.
wonder if Yahoo or any of you know about the mis-doings of the Shyu brothers or not. Or maybe Slide embraces those ideals.

Also in the news ..
- McDonalds will start serving food
- Microsoft will make products that people love
- Oracle goes open Source
- The Open Social theory is finally cracked by French Monks.. The generic code base is called "Ménage à trois", it works on all platforms (apart from Facebook)

Wow, Facebook finally took decisive action against Slide!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Better late than never, shame they let them ruin things for the rest of us first. Next please delete Spamwall.

Ok, well, it was nice while it lasted.

They were NOT suspended for breaking the rules. They were suspended for leaking private profile data. >_<

Either way they were kicked out. I finally have more faith in the platform. Seems there is a reason to come back to it!
